Our Love Affair with Kitchen Islands (Part 4 of a 4-Part Series): A Small Idea-Filled Island

Waypoint's style 630F in Cherry Chocolate Glaze

This small island is part of a mini-kitchen in a tiny in-law suite yet it is packed with features. My favorite is that the back of the island faces the sitting area and houses the television. It’s designed with a combination of wall cabinets ordered to look like bookcases and a short wall cabinet to support the flat-screen television. It’s all built on a platform. The back of the island finishes out at about 42” high and adds a visual screen of kitchen clutter. This taller area also provides the space for electrical outlets on the sink-side of the island.

The small rounded snack bar follows the curvature of the wall. That’s a nice way to add the design principle of repetition to the design. Even though it only seats two (perfect for an in-law suite) it adds extra work space too.
