Basics of Brilliant Kitchen Lighting
Shedding the Right Light
The heart of the home, the kitchen is where we gather, cook, socialize and entertain. This multi-functional space requires layers of illumination. Let us shed some light on a few elements to consider.
Dimmers. Regardless of the light source, dimmers provide the flexibility needed to shed the right amount of light on any given situation.
Mix it up. Because each source of lighting has a different job it does well, your plan should include a good mix of the following:
Overhead, or recessed lighting, provides a large sweeping blanket of light. It works well if you want to illuminate the entire room however, it lacks precision and flexibility.
Undercabinet lighting is best for task lighting and shedding light on countertops areas of the kitchen. It is installed, as the name states, under a cabinet. LED strips are a breeze to install and work well.
Pendant lighting is stylish and popular. These lights hang from the ceiling on a long cord or wire. Because the light points directly below, they work really well for kitchen islands, cooking or food prep areas. For a balanced, well-lit area–install in sets of three.
Drawer lighting is something you will really appreciate. By using a LED Soft Strip, placed strategically, combined with a motion sensor, the light will automatically turn on when you open the drawer and off when it is closed.
Toe kick lighting is a simple way to accent your kitchen by lighting the perimeter, underneath the lower cabinets and island, and provide a safe pathway at night. Use a one or two wall SS1 LED strip lighting and don’t forget to add a separate switch or dimmer so you can control this lighting separately.
Bulbs matter. To ensure color consistency, select the same color bulbs–warm or cool–throughout the space. This way, the tone of the floor, counters, and cabinets will have the same feeling.
