Success built from scratch.

Designer spotlight: Amanda Zubke

Amanda & McKenna Zubke

We’re celebrating a decade of making dreams come true with Waypoint. It seemed only fitting to speak to some of the designers who contributed to our success. We sat down with several inspiring Waypoint designers who embrace living life with style. Here’s what Amanda Zubke had to say about translating things you love into the perfect space.

A self-taught 2020 guru, Amanda Zubke’s passion for design was simmering long before she became the lead designer at GW Smith. Amanda’s collaborative spirit started at home—her home, that is. What began out of necessity to help her husband blossomed into a fruitful career.

How did you get started in the design business?

I am completely self-taught. My husband is a contractor so when he needed help with design, I stepped in to help. At the time I was home with my kids, so I taught myself 2020. After that, I learned all about the kitchen design business. That whole experience snowballed into a career.

To what do you attribute your success?

My passion for cooking makes it easy for me to think from a chef’s perspective. I’m a good listener so whether or not the homeowner cooks, I am able to understand their needs and design a functionally beautiful space. I believe everyone deserves a beautiful kitchen. It’s the heart of the home.

What’s your biggest career success?

Recently, I designed 16 new units for a modern luxury apartment complex in downtown Winston-Salem. I designed some of the units for prospective buyers, and, in other units, I collaborated with the new homeowners. I enjoyed the creativity of designing both equally. I see myself as a problem-solver and a resource. I’m here to help my clients, and I truly love it. Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

These days, when Amanda needs a hand with social media or taking photos of her work, she enlists a naturally gifted colleague: her daughter, McKenna. For the Zubkes, making remodeling dreams come true continues to be a family affair!
