Get in the zone: upgrading kitchen

We eat, drink, cook, entertain and even dance in the kitchen. The modern kitchen has expanded in size and functionality so it’s only natural, design should follow. To ensure efficient flow, we need to think beyond the classic work triangle. Kitchen zones, each with a specific purpose, are the answer. The three primary work zones are food preparation, cooking and cleanup. Once you’ve established these basic zones, sprinkle in a few specialty areas that strike your fancy, add some smart storage solutions and next thing you know, you’ll be cooking, dancing and entertaining in style!

1 Food Preparation Zone

Most of your time is spent in the food preparation zone. It should be located in close proximity to food storage and the refrigerator. Include plenty of counter space and storage for cutting boards, mixing appliances, measuring cups and other utensils. For easy waste disposal, make sure a trash can is within arm’s reach.

Suggested storage solutions: Cabinet Tray Divider, Full Height Base Pantry Pull-Out, Deep Furniture Drawers, Cutlery Divider Inserts, Wood Tiered Cutlery Divider, Base Wastebasket

2 Cooking Zone

In this zone you’ll find the oven, stove, cooktop and other cooking appliances. Allow plenty of counter space for hot containers and ingredients used while cooking. You will be transporting food from the prep zone, so make sure they aren’t far apart. Many times an island works well as part of the cooking zone.

Suggested storage solutions: Deep Roll-Out Trays, Spice Drawer Inserts, Full Height Base Tray Divider Pull-Out

3 Cleaning Zone

Because no one likes to clean-up, efficiency is important in the cleaning zone. This zone includes the sink, dishwasher and trash can. To avoid breaking dishes, make sure cabinets used to store everyday dishes and glasses are strategically located.

Suggested storage solutions: Base Wastebasket, Sliding Towel Bar & Sink Base Multi-Storage Shelf, Deep Furniture Drawers, Tilt Out Tray

4 Hosting Zone

The hosting zone should be located outside of the work flow area. This is an ideal place to store specialty items used for entertaining like, serving plates, good china and silver, etc.

Suggested storage solutions: Deep Furniture Drawers, Wood Tiered Cutlery Dividers, Cutlery Divider Inserts, Deep Roll-Out Trays, Peg Dish Organizer & Scalloped Roll-Out Tray

5 Coffee Zone

If you’re a coffee lover, there’s no better way to elevate your morning routine than by adding a coffee zone. Store everything from mugs to an espresso maker, all behind closed doors.

Suggested storage solutions: Spice Insert Drawer, Furniture Drawers

6 Bar Zone

Whether you’re entertaining guests or just enjoying a cocktail while cooking, a built-in bar zone ensures easy access to safely stored glassware and all your favorite spirits.

Suggested storage solutions: Spice Insert Drawer, Furniture Drawers, Wine Storage Unit, Stem Glass Holders
