Finding quality time to relax with friends and family can be a challenge in a world that moves at the pace of high-speed internet. That’s why many homeowners insist that a living room be both warm and casual. The wall-to-wall mantle, in this space, makes a statement. It begs, “stay a while, curl up on a cushy pillow and take a deep breath.” Treasured books peeking through the glass cabinets reinforce a feeling of warmth and urge relaxation. The fireplace serves as a toasty focal point. The expansive mantel contains further encouragement to leave the busy world behind. This thoughtful wall of cabinetry stores board games, tea sets, knitting baskets, jigsaw puzzles and, of course, a mini bar. The addition of plants breathes new life into a room and allows you to change the look–each season. Here are a few tips to keep your houseplants alive year-round.
The Right Amount of Water
Overwatering is one of the most common reasons a plant doesn’t thrive. To find out if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch into the soil, close to the edge of the pot. If it’s dry, it’s time to water!
Make sure your pots have drainage holes, to help prevent root rot. Another way to ensure proper drainage is to put a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the pot, about 1⁄2 inch to 1 inch thick, to keep water away from the roots.
The Right Lighting
When you purchase a plant, read the label to ensure it receives the best possible lighting (and watering)–full sun, partial sun or shade.
