Transforming a smaller house, like this shotgun house in New Orleans, and turning it into a stylish and functional living space takes some serious planning. It’s all about opening up the space to make room for lots of storage and versatility. In this featured remodel, each room has more than one use. High ceilings surrounded by light walls keep the space from feeling cramped.
LET THERE BE LIGHT
This space takes full advantage of the natural light. A decorative glass panel, in the exterior entry door, coupled with a glass transom above, allows natural light to flood the space. Decorative chandeliers combined with carefully placed recessed lighting create a central glow—while under cabinet lighting adds warmth and dimension. Mirrors strategically placed on an opposite wall expand the space and add light. Some might say it’s overlit–not so–this homeowner has total control with dimmers on all switches.
STORAGE, STORAGE AND MORE STORAGE
Every square inch of this space works hard and delivers ample storage. That’s why they chose floor-to-ceiling 410 Painted Linen cabinets. On the highest doors, glass insert panels keep it interesting and airy. The library ladder is not only functional but adds character to the space. Crown moldings add panache and give the space a touch of sophistication. The 650 Maple Espresso base cabinets and island provide even more storage plus they make a statement with light granite countertops complemented with a white subway tile backsplash and built-in range hood.
DOUBLE YOUR SPACE
When it comes to small spaces, one use is not enough! Turning every room into a multi-use area is essential. A large island was created as the focal point of this space. The expansive island serves as both a table and prep area. Cleverly tucked under the island, ready to roll out, is additional storage and a cutting board. In the adjoining room, a bedroom and office strategically coexist. A Murphy bed, when not in use, is stylishly contained and serves as a functional desk. Flanked by Waypoint cabinets, shelves and drawers, as well as additional storage at ceiling level—there is a place for everything.
