Properly arranging furniture can be one of the most frustrating—yet important—parts of the design process. Here are some simple tips to create a perfect lounge area for sipping coffee and colorful conversation—without straining to hear or knocking drinks over.
Start by selecting a coffee table slightly lower than the seating around it. The length of the table should be approximately two thirds the length of the seating. Both the placement of the table and seating should allow ample room for guests to circulate easily.
To create a seating arrangement that’s comfortable and encourages conversation, arrange seating close to your coffee table. Seated guests should be able to comfortably reach their drink without getting up.
When creating a lounge or seating area, it’s important to provide a comfortable amount of personal space. You’ll need to allow for plenty of personal space without compromising eye contact or ease of communication. The average person is about 24 inches across the shoulders which means 30 to 36 inches of personal space is ideal. For comfortable conversation, the maximum distance between two people would be somewhere between 58 and 80 inches.
Voila! You’ve created a living space that’s easier to live in.
