Window treatments have a magical way of transforming a living space. Like a beautiful coat that elevates an outfit from fine to fabulous, they are the piece de resistance. Depending on their type, these frame-worthy friends come in many styles and go by various names. Are there any hard and fast rules for window treatments? Just like a tailored coat, they should be the correct length and represent your style. Here are a few tips to ensure your windows are stylishly dressed.
TIPS FOR HANGING WINDOW TREATMENTS
Let’s start with length. Hanging window treatments too low makes windows appear small and unimpressive. For regular height ceilings, hang the rod approximately 3” below the crown molding or ceiling. Should you be lucky enough to have high ceilings, measure the distance between the top of the window trim and the ceiling then divide by two.
To add fullness and balance, mount curtain rods 3”-6” out from the sides of the window casing.
Narrow window treatments look skimpy and cheap. They’re the interior design equivalent of the super skinny leather necktie. To avoid this look, select a curtain rod 8”-10” wider than the window. This allows plenty of room for the panels to hang on either side of the window.
Resist the urge to match the curtain length with the bottom of the window. Curtains should kiss the floor or puddle unless, of course, there’s a countertop beneath the window.
FABRIC AND DESIGN
Fabric and design have transformational qualities. The materials you select will also help control light, privacy and warmth. Strut your style with texture, color and pattern. For a timeless look, natural linen and sheer curtains are popular options. For a bolder design statement, Ikat prints are a stylish. In search of a little shine? Textured jacquard, with its raised pattern and metallic threads, lends a dressy feel without being too flashy. Matte velvet delivers a monochromatic look with rich texture and elegance.
